“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
This week's theme: forgiveness
As we enter the new year, we have an opportunity to hit a reset button. What would you like to release, forgive or leave behind? What is your process for letting go?
Forgiveness can lead to health benefits including a stronger immune system, less depression or anxiety, improved heart health, lower blood pressure, and improved self-esteem. When we have been deeply hurt, asking for and giving forgiveness can be difficult — and transformative — within our relationships and communities. The benefits of forgiveness have even been harnessed by nations, like Rwanda, as a tool for healing and recovery after violent events.
💡 When it comes to forgiveness, it is not always necessary to feel positively toward the person who has wronged you, according to research.
Forgiveness involves making an active, deliberate decision to let go of bitterness, resentment or other difficult emotions. For many of us, forgiveness is part of the process of letting go. It does not require forgetting; rather, it is an opportunity for personal empowerment. You have moved through pain, and that pain does not define you.
Happy new year,
Christen Mullane, Ph.D.
We can move toward forgiveness by increasing empathy. One type of meditation, called loving kindness meditation, can help us experience many benefits including positive emotions and empathy. As you practice letting go and forgiving, try this loving kindness meditation.Share on facebook Share Share on twitter Tweet Share on reddit Reddit Share on email Forward
